Today’s journey brings us out of small, countryside villages into a thriving metropolitan city called Leon! The hiking was not so spectacular, but Leon is a very venerable and historical city with significant architectural and cultural highlights!

Leon turned out to be a very large city with lots of things to see and do. We kept ourselves in the old city, which was well demarcated and was a world of its own with expansive stone boulevards and architectural highlights, foremost among them being the “Cathedral of Leon.”

It gets a little tricky distinguishing gothic architecture from neo-gothic, but basically this cathedral is an example of gothic architecture . . . however . . . like many structures in Europe, buildings, cathedrals, castles, undergo architectural evolution (or devolution) throughout the centuries so there are elements of Cathedral of Leon that incorporate other styles such as “Flamboyant Gothic,” “Antigua Guatemala Baroque,” “Romanesque,” etc. In other words “really fancy cathedral!”

What seems most incredible, to me, is the attention to detail and the many different meanings that the architecture conveys, indeed these places took hundreds of years to build.

Overall, we enjoyed strolling the expansive stone boulevards and different parts of the old city and we indulged ourselves in some culinary delights as well! See you tomorrow, with more updates; thanks for following!
