Greetings, today we will hike a little further past where it suggests in the book to a town called Atapuerca. That means a long hike of about 19 miles, but we’re ready to go!

We got an early start today due to the length of the hike. Departing Belorado around 0600, we were treated to a bright moon in the early morning hours!

We are definitely setting into routines, leave early when you have long days ahead so you can arrive early at your destination and avoid the mid-afternoon sun. Another trick is to have something light to eat before you leave then hike a few miles to the next town and get breakfast at a Bar-Restaurante! Today we did so and met up with friends from Ireland and Canada!

Today turned out to be one of the best hiking days, temperatures stayed in the upper 60’s lower 70’s Fahrenheit with cool breezes, sun, and spectacular views!

As a special treat, we were greeted by a herd of goats on our arrival to San Juan de Ortega! Also, I met a man and his wife hiking El Camino. He graduated from my high school in 1986. My graduation year was 2001!

It was a long day, but it didn’t feel like it because of the weather, our friends, and some of the interesting things we saw along the way. We arrived at a quaint looking albergue in Atapuerca and were ready for some rest and dinner. See you tomorrow!
