After yesterday’s long march, we decided to keep it relatively short . . . an easy 14 miles to Rabanal del Camino! We encountered some fun people and amazing sights so check them out below!
Today’s map . . . Taken from “Village to Village Guide, Camino de Santiago, Camino Frances: St. Jean – Santiago – Finisterre” https://www.caminoguidebook.com/about. We wish we had planned more time to spend in Astorga there were some impressive architecture examples and a few notable museums. We came across another marvelous example of Antoni Gaudi’s work. Here we are standing in front of the castle!
Quintessential Gaudi, right out of a fairytale! There are always plenty of murals depicting familiar Spanish pastimes such as this one: drinking wine and eating ham!
The trail today led us from Astorga, a city on a hill, on an increasingly uphill journey to Rabanal del Camino, a village in the mountains! The weather was sunny, but cool breezes and some wind prevailed keeping us mostly dry. Of course, we had to stop to visit a man selling trinkets with a rather cute companion . . .
It was love at first sight! Not for sale, but nice to cuddle! We seemed to attract and be especially attuned with the natural world around us today!Every once in a while, it’s nice to stop and smell the flowers!
I can’t emphasize what a nice day it was to be out doing a journey today, perhaps it is the rosy glasses of hindsight, but there were many sights, beautiful even though seemingly mundane.
Teepees in the distance, we never found out why they were standing there, but interesting to see nonetheless! Going up into the mountains, we are now seeing more stone structures, remarkable for the ambiance of the region they convey and the interesting textures!A bit old and decrepit, but a perfect picture indeed! We have come across so many of these in various cities and towns so I had to pose in one just once!
It seemed to us that we chose the right place to stay, a historic stone inn called La Posada de Gaspar, complete with a grapevine canopy and a small balcony overlooking the street!
We could see the grapes above us as we dined!A balcony view with the EU flag front and center . . . what more could we want?It seems we had a prolific day making friends with animals!Rabanal del Camino, almost all the structures were made of stone, old and new!Something interesting to find in every nook!An old storage space under a field, not sure if it has been opened anytime recently, but fits the scene very well!
Suffice to say, from the pictures we have shared, we really enjoyed all of the experiences we had today. Rabanal del Camino was a small village in a mountain setting, but it had plenty of character and small little details to discover. Well, until tomorrow, goodnight!
