Restarting the blog . . . . I will cover the rest of the trip as if we are hiking when I last left off. I am putting the date at the start of the blog posts now for continuity purposes. As always, hope you enjoy!
Todays hike takes us from Ledigos, which is not pictured on this map see yesterday’s post, to a small town with a very long name . . . Calzadilla de los Hermanillos. The fun part about this stage is that we walk along the ancient Roman roads that Rome used to transport gold from Galicia back to Rome. The actual roads are not original, but it is the historical route. And we had some other surprises . . .

We came across some pretty amazing scenery heading out this morning. Mist and fog made for some mystical looking landscapes.

We passed through a town called Calzada de Coto and had perhaps our most memorable experience yet. We met an Italian couple in their 60s and got a few directions and stopped at a store with them for lunch. Then as we were leaving town a rainstorm moved in. We saw the Italian couple on a porch at the last house as we were leaving town and then beckoned us over to join them. As fortune had it, the owner of the house also owned vineyards and he brought us some fresh wine and cheese. Then we got to meet two children from Ukraine whom he had adopted. The whole meeting was delightfully spontaneous and carried the true spirit of “El Camino” kindness, cooperation, and understanding. After a brief 30 minutes the rain subsided and we were able to continue on our journey!

After our brief rest we continued to Calzadilla de los Hermanillos. We were pleased with the accommodations for the night and the town had a few exhibits regarding ancient roman roads with some actual stonework from the period. See you tomorrow for the next stage of the El Camino!
