El Camino Day 9: Logrono to Najera

Preview of today’s hike: 18 miles to Najera, gradual up hill and gradual down hill, not too tough but long.

Today’s map . . . Taken from “Village to Village Guide, Camino de Santiago, Camino Frances: St. Jean – Santiago – Finisterre” https://www.caminoguidebook.com/about. An excellent guidebook we highly recommend !

Many things to show you today. At first, I thought today would be a rather mundane 18 mile hike with not much to see . . . I was wrong! Let’s dive right in!

The first thing we came across was a wonderful public park and water fowl sanctuary!

When in Spain watch out for the giant bulls!

. . . and the giant bottles of wine!

I mentioned in yesterday’s post that we are passing through wine country, “La Rioja”. I suppose the picture above illustrates that point. I met an Irish man whose opinion was that the best wines come from the Napa Valley due to the climate and weather patterns with the cool winds coming in from the sea. I suppose tastes vary and having been used to some of the wines in the states, “old-world” wines have a certain appeal to me right now. I have been enjoying the wines in Spain immensely!

We have crossed many miles of vineyards between yesterday and today with more to come . . . the landscape is quite stunning!

Here I am under a tree pondering all the vineyards in the region!

In the background you can see stormy weather a good 15 miles away. We were able to see all the rain and lightning from a distance and benefit from the clouds and cool wind. The contrast between the clouds and red earth was amazing!

Another interesting part of today’s journey was the “1km of Art,” which we came across on our approach to the town of Navarrete. The path featured some interesting pieces of art and nice change from the usual scenery!

The metal sign announcing your entry to the “1 km of Art!”

Interesting art installments like this one adorned the road!

You can look at more art that we saw along the way on my “El Camino: Scenic Photos” page.

We were very grateful when we arrived to our lodging for the night. We are staying at a place with a balcony. The 18 mile hike ended up being 19 miles so we are ready for rest and rewards!

Our balcony view!

Ah yes . . . sweet rewards!

See you tomorrow. Thankfully, our hike will be shorter, but probably still full of suprises!
