El Camino Day 5: Pamplona to Puente la Reina

Today’s journey takes us to Puente la Reina. Seems like it will be pretty hot today so we will be sure to hydrate and take breaks. In general the earlier that we start the better it is and then we get to rest and enjoy the towns that we visit.

Today’s map . . . Taken from “Village to Village Guide, Camino de Santiago, Camino Frances: St. Jean – Santiago – Finisterre” https://www.caminoguidebook.com/about. An excellent guidebook we highly recommend !

Leaving Pamplona had a nice feel to it. The rest of the city was well laid out and the Camino symbols and arrows were easy to follow!

Some nice city scenery made us feel good about starting today’s hike.

As I have mentioned before, we are always on the lookout for the “Camino shell” and “yellow arrows” to point us in the right direction. They have been easy to spot so far. Sometimes, cities and towns have special medallions on the sidewalk more frequently placed that makes it very easy to follow the trail, but when you get out into the countryside they are mostly at every crossroad or junction.

Some cities and towns place medallions along El Camino

Today’s hike was beautiful and we weren’t the only ones to think so . . .

This nice dog came trotting up the trail with a large stick in their mouth. They were very friendly along with their owners. In general, the dogs we have met and come across in Spain are very well trained and usually roam around without a leash, but don’t bother you unless you are friendly to them!

How many ways can you say “breathtaking” of “takes your breath away?” Well, hopefully we will still be breathing through El Camino . . . we pretty much have to!

Later on we encountered this scraggly character!

The path we followed today took us over a high point called “Alto de Perdon.” At the top of this area is a sculpture of pilgrims dedicated to the many that have traveled El Camino!

These sculptures were also featured in the film “The Way” in one scene.

Going downhill was a bit rough, but we made it!

Today’s final destination was Puente la Reina. We made it there in good shape. Today we really felt like we were making many friends along El Camino and we all got together for dinner. It was fun walking the streets with people we have forged a bond with discussing life and our surroundings! See you tomorrow!

It’s nice to take a rest and talk with people you have met on the way during El Camino!

Dinner with people from Ecuador, Canada, Italy, Ireland, and the US!

Watching the sunset on the medieval bridge was a really nice ending to the day to get us ready for bed!
