El Camino Day 4: Pamplona (Rest Day)

Today was a much-needed rest day. We both had some blister issues after the trip through the Pyrenees Mountains. We discovered some very useful products from a “Pilgrim” store that sold a lot of outdoor gear similar to REI or EMS in the United States.

Time to treat the sore feet and blisters!

Our arrival to Pamplona yesterday was rainy, but spectacular. The Camino trail took us right up to the stone walls surrounding the cathedral!

Pamplona has a very nice old-world medieval aesthetic!

Part of the Pamplona Cathedral!
Oops, I got the garbage cans in the photo, but every city has those, right?

We decided that we were going to treat ourselves to a nice hotel, a bit better lodging than an albergue since we were staying an extra day. The extra services and comfortable beds were welcomed by us.

The streets of the inner city are very narrow, and one can see right away what a spectacle it would be to see bulls charging down these streets with people running in front of them! I am of course refering to the famous “Running of the Bulls” event that Pamplona puts on every year.

Signage denoting the route for the “Running of the Bulls” seems pretty clear what’s going on here!

Another thing I was told to do while in Pamplona was to try some churros. Even though churros can be found just about anywhere in Spain my friend told me they were especially good in Pamplona. So we settled down at a cafe and I got a nice plate of churros and some chocolate to dip them in!

The churros in Pamplona did not disappoint. They were fresh and, when dipped in the chocolate, extra delicious!

One of our favorite experiences was going to a Cafe Iruna, notable as a place where Hemingway used to eat at.

Cafe Iruna!

Just about everywhere we turned we found amazing views and architecture.

A nice shady square!

The blue of this building seemed to compliment the statue holding a trident appropriately

In the evening we found a rather fancy restaurant to have a sumptuous dinner. We needed the protein to help our muscles recover!

We were the earliest guests, but in about an hour the restaurant was full!

The grill featured hot coals and a variety of fishes and meats were cooked on them!

The fish was delicious and very well prepared!

Well, I guess this place has been around for a while!

All in all, it was a rest and recovery day that we desperately needed after the first few days of exertion. Tomorrow we will be back on the Camino, see you then!
