El Camino Day 2: Roncesvalles to Larrasoana

Woke up at 0630 this morning. Here is the section we are walking today!

Taken from “Village to Village Guide, Camino de Santiago, Camino Frances: St. Jean – Santiago – Finisterre” https://www.caminoguidebook.com/about. An excellent guidebook we highly recommend !

The guidebook directs you to go to Zubiri, but also mentions Larrasoana a little further along, so we went there for a “more remote experience. “

Where to begin . . . We woke, had a simple breakfast at La Posada and were packed and ready to go!

Two eager travelers!

So, one of the amazing features of El Camino is that you get a “Camino Passport” and collect stamps at all the places you visit. Official “Camino Pilgrim” offices give stamps, but also albergues, hotels, certain businesses, abbeys, churches, and many more places. People celebrate the beauty of the stamps you get along the way, some are rarer than others. For simplicity, we are only getting stamps at places where we stay for the night, but who knows if a stamp catches our eye then . . .

Lovely stamps we collect along the way!

Pretty amazing, right? Well, here are a few choice photos for the day!

Wait a minute . . . Yesterday an ancient stone said 765km? Perhaps the stone was moved?

Building from our favorite town that we passed through called “Burguete”

Hemingway has some interesting historical connections to the region we passed through.

Places Hemingway visited/lived in the region.

We have a soft spot for cats . . . We saw about 30+ of them today!

The dogs were just as friendly!

*We are not promoting approaching strange animals, even domesticated ones, but we took the risk and they turned out to be friendly. Always use good judgement. Oh . . . We passed a bridge called “The Rabies Bridge” in a town called Zubiri. Local legend is that if you take your pet across the bridge three times then it will not get rabies . . . Oh, those crazy legends!

Our trek today took us through many forested paths!

Nice and shady

It’s springtime and wild flowers are everywhere!

Made it this far? Here’s an amusing anecdote from our dinner in Larrasuena, the town we are staying in tonight.

We were having dinner at the local “supermarcado” and I estimate I could have bought the entire contents of the store for $1500 probably less. Dinner was two salads and a whole roasted chicken! It was delicious! Then the rain came . . .

Flash rain/lightning storm!

Our salad bowl filing with water from the hole in the tarp above us!

It rained for about 30 minutes and it was starting to lighten up so we decided to head back to our lodgings. The store owner offered us an umbrella if we brought it back to him tomorrow morning. So we took him up on the offer. He came back with a flimsy umbrella, which promptly fell apart in his hands so he said “free for you now.” It still worked to a degree so we took it and all had a good laugh.

Our newest piece of travel gear!

Rain brought out the snails!

Well, now we are very tired from our 17.5 mile day of hiking. Good night!

As always, I will post some new things in the other sections and revise a few things. Enjoy!
